Can you combine colourful evenings, useful white light and the right ceiling protection?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

RGB, CCT and fire rating describe different things. RGB refers to colour mixing; CCT describes the appearance of white light; a fire rating relates to a fitting's tested performance in specified ceiling constructions. A premium scheme starts by separating those jobs, then choosing fittings that meet the actual room and installation requirements.
Where should colour be used?
Coloured light works well as an accent behind a television, in a recess or along a carefully detailed shelf. It can give a room a different mood without making every surface strongly coloured. Keep a useful white task layer for cooking, reading and cleaning, where seeing materials and edges clearly matters.
Compare RGB LED flex with RGBW LED flex. A dedicated white channel can provide a different result from mixing coloured channels to approximate white. The matching controller, supply voltage, power and channel arrangement are essential parts of the choice. Similar looking tape is not automatically compatible.
What does adjustable CCT add?
CCT adjustment offers a range of white appearances rather than a rainbow of colours. It can help you choose a comfortable room tone and coordinate adjacent fittings. The CCT adjustable LED flex is an example of a white tuning product. A smart RGB and white GU10 combines another set of functions, with its own control requirements.
Some downlights provide a small number of selectable CCT settings; others allow app based adjustment. Ask how the setting is changed and whether every light in the group can be controlled consistently. A wall dimmer should not be added to a smart lamp unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that arrangement.
What does fire rated actually establish?
A fire rated fitting is intended to help maintain a specified ceiling assembly's performance when installed exactly as tested and instructed. It is not a universal promise for every ceiling material, void, insulation arrangement or fire duration. The electrician needs the fitting's current evidence and the building's requirements.
The Knightsbridge smart RGB and CCT fire rated downlight and SpektroLED Evo selectable downlight pack illustrate products with different specifications. Compare the exact model's tested ceiling types, cut out, void depth, insulation restrictions and driver arrangement. IP protection is another separate characteristic, particularly near water; it does not replace the fire performance check.
How do you keep the finished result coherent?
Draw the task, ambient and accent layers before buying. Choose a consistent white setting, hide direct views of LED tape where practical and keep drivers accessible for service. Commission scenes that still leave ordinary room use straightforward. Retain product references, controller details and selected settings for replacement.
Use a competent electrician for fixed mains installation and any ceiling alteration. Cleaning the closed fitting should follow its instructions. Flickering, overheating or moisture ingress needs assessment rather than an app reset. The video below demonstrates a selectable CCT downlight; it does not certify the suitability of a different model or ceiling.
Compare the key choices
| Term | What it describes | It does not establish |

| CCT | White light appearance in kelvin | Brightness or electrical protection |
| Fire rated | Tested ceiling assembly performance | Universal suitability for all ceilings |
