Why can two lights with the same wattage feel completely different on the job?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

A good LED work light puts useful light on the task without leaving your hands in shadow or shining directly into your eyes. Shopping by wattage alone misses the details that matter: light output, beam shape, positioning and how long the light must operate.
How many lumens do you need?
Lumens describe light output; watts describe electrical power consumption. A brighter specification is helpful for lighting a larger area, but a small inspection task may benefit more from a light that can be aimed close to the work. There is no single lumen figure that suits every garage, loft or building site.
For close work, compare a handheld rechargeable worklight with the Amtech clamp worklight. A clamp or adjustable base can free both hands, provided it is attached securely and kept clear of moving machinery. For broader coverage, look at the V-TAC mains work floodlight. Check each product's actual output and mounting instructions rather than assuming the larger housing is brighter.
Is cool white better for working?
Colour temperature describes the appearance of white light in kelvin. Warm white looks softer; neutral or cooler white can give a crisp working appearance. It does not independently establish brightness or colour accuracy. If you are matching paint, cables or finishes, also check colour rendering and test the material under the light in which it will eventually be seen.
Avoid mixing very different white tones across the same work surface. For a garage bench, an adjustable task light alongside broad room lighting can reduce the tendency to lean into your own shadow. A diffuser and sensible aiming are often more comfortable than a bare, intense light at eye level.
Which power source fits the job?
A rechargeable LED floodlight is convenient when you move between rooms or do not have a nearby socket. Compare runtime at the brightness setting you intend to use; a headline maximum may refer to a lower setting. Check charging time, battery replacement arrangements and whether the charger is included.
A mains light suits longer tasks with a suitable supply. Construction sites may specify particular supplies and equipment, including reduced voltage systems. Follow the site rules and risk assessment: a domestic 230V light is not automatically appropriate. Keep leads away from access routes and never improvise damaged plugs or connectors.
What matters outdoors?
Check the IP rating and operating instructions for the complete light, its connections and its charging arrangement. Splash resistance does not mean immersion resistance. A battery light can also have charging restrictions that differ from its operating conditions. Stop using a light with damaged seals, exposed conductors or a cracked lens.
After use, disconnect as instructed, allow the light to cool, wipe it with the recommended method and store it dry. A rotating COB worklight and a compact COB light offer alternative positioning styles; compare those practical details before paying for output you will rarely need.
Compare the key choices
| Feature | Why it matters | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Lumens and beam | Useful coverage | Output plus spread, glare and positioning |
| Colour temperature | Appearance of the task | Kelvin and colour rendering |
| Battery runtime | Uninterrupted work | Runtime at your chosen output |
| IP rating | Environmental suitability | Light, cable entries and charging restrictions |

Frequently asked questions
Does a higher wattage always mean more light?
No. Compare lumens and beam coverage as well as power consumption.
Can an outdoor light charge in the rain?
Do not assume so. Charging ports and chargers may need dry conditions even when the light itself has an outdoor rating.
