Why do some LED lamps flicker even when the dimmer says it supports LEDs?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

An LED dimmer works as part of a system: lamps or luminaires, their drivers, wiring and the control itself. A compatible system can give smooth, comfortable adjustment. A mismatch can cause flicker, buzzing, poor low level operation or a limited range. Buying by the faceplate finish alone leaves the most important checks unanswered.
Are the lamps actually dimmable?
Start with the exact lamp or fitting reference. A non dimmable LED should not be treated as dimmable because it fits the same socket. Check the manufacturer’s approved dimming method and compatibility guidance. Integrated fittings may have a separate driver whose requirements are crucial.
The 3000K dimmable GU10 and 4000K version are examples to investigate alongside a suitable control. Keep lamp families consistent on a circuit where practical. Mixing different drivers or technologies can make a combination harder to assess.
How do minimum and maximum loads work?
Use the dimmer's LED rating rather than its larger incandescent rating. Check the minimum too: a small LED load can sit below the supported range. Add up the connected lighting load as directed and consider the permitted number of drivers, inrush and any manufacturer derating requirements. The number printed on the knob is not a complete design calculation.
Compare the Selectric 5–100W LED dimmer, Knightsbridge intelligent dimmer module and Knightsbridge leading edge dimmer. These have different ranges and specifications. Leading edge or trailing edge is a compatibility requirement to check, not a guarantee that one type works with all LEDs.
What about multiway and smart control?
An ordinary two way arrangement and a smart dimming system can require different controls and wiring. Some systems use a particular companion control or a retractive switch. Do not place two ordinary dimmers on the same circuit unless the manufacturer’s instructions explicitly support it.
The Shelly smart dimming controller is a separate type of solution. Confirm the exact model, lamp compatibility, network requirements and installation space. A 0–10V controller is different again and cannot replace a phase cut wall dimmer just because both adjust brightness.
What should happen during commissioning?
A competent electrician should confirm circuit suitability, safe isolation, wiring and enclosure space. Some compatible dimmers permit a minimum level or operating mode to be set according to their instructions. That is a commissioning adjustment, not a way to make an unsuitable lamp safe.
After installation, test the full usable range and normal switching positions. Keep records of the lamps and dimmer. If buzzing, flashing, overheating or unreliable starting develops, stop using the affected setup and arrange assessment. When replacing a lamp, recheck compatibility; a new LED with the same wattage can still use a different driver.
Compare the key choices
| Check | Why it matters | Ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Lamp or driver | Defines permitted dimming | Exact reference and approved method |
| LED load range | Both limits matter | Total load and driver count guidance |
| Control topology | Wiring and interaction differ | Single point, multiway or smart requirements |
| Commissioning | Establishes usable operation | Approved settings and installation records |

Frequently asked questions
Can a non dimmable LED be used on a dimmer at full brightness?
Do not assume that is acceptable. Use only a combination approved by the lamp and control manufacturers.
Does flicker always mean the lamp is faulty?
No. Compatibility, load range, settings and wiring can all matter. Have the system assessed rather than repeatedly swapping parts at random.
