Does a higher amp rating make a cable outlet suitable for every appliance?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

A cable outlet provides a neat route for an appliance flex to leave a fixed wiring accessory. It is useful where a suitable appliance is connected permanently rather than through a plug and socket. The number on the plate is an accessory rating: it does not increase the capacity of the supply cable, protective device or appliance flex.
Where might a 20A or 25A cable outlet be used?
An electrician may specify a flex outlet for an appropriately designed heating or appliance connection. The right choice depends on the whole installation, including the appliance instructions and the means of switching, isolation and protection. A 25A outlet is not automatically a better replacement for a 20A one. Nor does either become a cooker outlet simply because the faceplate looks similar.
Compare the Selectric 20A centre or side entry outlet with the Selectric 25A side entry outlet. Their entry arrangements are useful selection details, but current rating alone cannot establish suitability. For a different design, the Knightsbridge 20A flex outlet plate has its own installation requirements. Its manufacturer lists a minimum mounting box depth of 25mm; other accessories can require different space.
What should be checked before ordering a replacement?
Start with the appliance model and its instructions. Record the existing accessory reference without dismantling live equipment. Ask the electrician to confirm circuit protection, cable sizes, earthing, terminal capacity, flex diameter, cord restraint and the available back box depth. A tight back box can leave little room for safe cable routing even when a plate physically fits.
Where local fused protection is required, a suitable fused connection unit may be part of the design. The switched fused spur with flex outlet is a different accessory from a plain outlet. A 45A cable outlet belongs to another rating class again; it should not be chosen as an upgrade without a design assessment.
How do you keep a permanent appliance connection in good condition?
Keep the flex free from furniture pressure, sharp bends and heat sources. Leave the accessory accessible rather than burying it behind fixed cabinetry. Visible scorching, a cracked plate, a loose cable or a burning smell calls for the appliance to be taken out of use and assessed. Do not tighten terminals or remove the cover as a household maintenance task.
Fixed mains connections require competent installation and safe isolation. Turning an appliance off at its controls does not prove its wiring is dead. The SELECT video below explains the professional safe isolation process; it is background knowledge, not a substitute for training or testing equipment.
A practical buying example
For a replacement heater connection, send your electrician the heater instructions, a photograph of the closed existing plate and the product links you are considering. This usually produces a more reliable shortlist than buying the highest rating available. A modular outlet such as this Selectric 20A module also needs its approved supporting grid system.
Compare the key choices
| Accessory | Typical purpose | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| 20A flex outlet | An approved fixed appliance connection | Check flex restraint, cable capacity and box depth |
| 25A flex outlet | A connection specified for that accessory | Does not uprate the circuit |
| Fused connection unit | Local fused protection where designed | Fuse and switching arrangement differ |
| 45A outlet | A separately designed higher rating application | Not a universal replacement |

Frequently asked questions
Can I replace a 20A outlet with a 25A plate?
Only after suitability is confirmed. Matching screw centres and a higher printed rating do not establish electrical or mechanical compatibility.
Does a flex outlet contain a fuse?
A plain outlet usually serves a connection and cable exit function. Check the exact product; a fused connection unit has a different purpose.
