Could one organised switch plate make a busy kitchen easier to use?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

A grid wiring system combines individual control modules in a supporting frame and front plate. It can bring several appliance controls into one organised location, which is useful in kitchens, utility rooms and other spaces with multiple fixed loads. The benefit is flexibility within an approved system, rather than universal interchangeability.
What makes up a grid installation?
The assembly can include a back box, supporting frame or grid, functional modules and a matching front plate. Each part has a role. A plate with the right number of openings is not necessarily compatible with another manufacturer's modules. Start with the exact product family and use its compatibility information.
For example, Selectric HEATER, MICROWAVE and FRIDGE FREEZER modules provide clearly marked functions. Their labels help users identify a control, but the electrician must still confirm load suitability, circuit arrangements and the required switching characteristics. An appliance label does not make a module suitable for every appliance of that type.
Why are modular switches useful in modern kitchens?
Grouped, consistently labelled controls can reduce visual clutter and make the intended operation easier to understand. Plan them with the actual appliance positions and access needs in mind. A switch that ends up behind a tall appliance or inside an inaccessible cupboard defeats much of the benefit.
Compare the four aperture front plate and three aperture front plate when considering the layout. Check the approved supports, box dimensions and module spacing before ordering. A balanced arrangement can also leave space for a permitted blank module where the chosen system supports future changes.
Can dimmers and outlets join the same system?
Some ranges include different functions, but approval and ratings need checking module by module. The Selectric LED dimmer grid module is intended for a different task from a double pole appliance switch. Its minimum and maximum LED load and lamp compatibility matter. A flex outlet, fuse module or data module may introduce further spacing and assembly requirements.
Keep a simple schedule showing which module controls each appliance and which product references were fitted. This is useful when a replacement is needed years later. It also helps avoid substituting a visually similar part from a different system.
What belongs in the installation brief?
Give the electrician a list of appliances, model instructions, preferred control positions and finish. Ask for confirmation of cable routes, terminal capacity, enclosure space, circuit protection and any derating requirements. Fixed mains work must be designed, installed and tested by a competent person; a grouped plate can contain more than one supply arrangement.
For maintenance, clean the closed plate as instructed and report sticking controls, heat marks or damaged covers. Do not remove the plate simply because one appliance is switched off. The Varilight video below illustrates a manufacturer's modular system for professional context. It does not establish cross compatibility with Selectric components.
Compare the key choices
| Component | Role | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| Module | Switching or another function | Rating, load type and approved system |
| Grid or frame | Supports the modules | Exact range and aperture arrangement |
| Front plate | Finishes the assembly | Compatible family and module layout |
| Back box | Provides wiring space | Depth, cable space and mounting requirements |

Frequently asked questions
Are all grid switches interchangeable?
No. Use the exact combinations approved for the product family.
Can a labelled switch power any appliance with that name?
The label identifies intended use. Electrical ratings, circuit design and the appliance instructions still determine suitability.
