Why will one LED strip dim smoothly while another flickers or will not respond?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

LED strip dimming is a system choice. The tape, driver, controller, wiring and user control all need to match. Buying a dimmer first and hoping it works with any strip can lead to flicker, limited adjustment or damaged equipment. Start with the tape specification and work through the whole chain.
Is the tape constant voltage or constant current?
Many decorative strips use a specified constant voltage supply, commonly 12V or 24V, but that is not a rule for every LED product. Constant current drivers serve a different electrical arrangement. A driver that physically connects is not necessarily suitable. Match the product's required output type and voltage exactly.
The 24V RGB LED flex, 24V RGBW flex and 24V adjustable CCT flex illustrate three different channel arrangements. Their controller requirements differ. Count the channels and confirm the approved tape, connectors and controller combination rather than matching the connector width by eye.
Where does dimming take place?
A suitable low voltage PWM controller adjusts the light downstream of its compatible supply. A phase cut dimmer works on an approved mains dimmable driver arrangement. A 0–10V interface uses another control method again. Those methods should not be mixed casually or treated as interchangeable labels on a shopping filter.
For comparison, the single colour inline tape controller, RGB controller and remote and RGBW controller and remote address different strip types. Their voltage, current per channel, total rating and control features need checking against the exact installation. A single colour controller cannot provide independent RGBW control.
How is power capacity worked out?
Use the strip manufacturer's watts per metre and the intended length to establish the lighting load, then follow its driver sizing and headroom guidance. Check the controller's total and per channel limits too. Driver capacity does not override a controller limit or permit an unlimited tape length.
Long runs can need a designed feed arrangement to manage voltage drop and brightness consistency. Follow the permitted run lengths and cable requirements rather than repeatedly extending the tape. Aluminium profiles can help with the specified thermal arrangement and a more even visual finish, but they must suit the tape dimensions and installation conditions.
What should be checked during installation and maintenance?
Plan accessible drivers and controllers, suitable ventilation and appropriate protection for the location. A waterproof tape coating does not automatically make cut ends, connectors or the power supply waterproof. Use approved sealing accessories and leave mains work to a competent electrician.
Test the full length and control range before closing access panels. Record the voltage, model references, channel order and settings for future replacement. Disconnect the system as instructed before cleaning or service. If a section changes colour, flickers or becomes unusually hot, investigate the system rather than increasing power or bypassing a control. The educational video explains PWM principles; building its example circuit is not required to use a suitable commercial system.
Compare the key choices
| Method | Where it acts | Compatibility question |
|---|---|---|
| Low voltage PWM | Between supply and supported tape | Voltage, channels and current limits? |
| Mains phase cut | Through an approved dimmable driver | Driver and wall dimmer approved together? |
| 0–10V | A specified control input | Does the driver accept that interface? |
| Smart or RF control | User interface to a compatible controller | Protocol, channels and local control? |

Frequently asked questions
Can a 12V strip use a 24V driver?
Use only the exact supply voltage and type specified for the strip. A higher voltage is not an upgrade.
Will one RGB remote control any RGBW tape?
Not automatically. Controller channels, protocol, voltage and ratings must match the tape and system.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of page when looking at its layout. The point of using is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, makings look like readablei English.

@Ruta Vaghasiya The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced the below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum”.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining more essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing.
