Are you short of outlets, or asking one socket to supply too much?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

A desk or TV unit can run out of plug positions long before it needs much power. A kitchen can have the opposite problem: only a few appliances may draw a substantial combined load. Before adding outlets, separate the need for more connections from the need for more electrical capacity.
What is a sensible short term solution?
A suitable extension lead can organise compatible equipment where its instructions and total load limit are respected. Choose enough length to reach without tension, but avoid loose coils and trailing cable across walkways. Compare the four gang switched lead, four gang 2m lead and two gang 5m lead for the actual location.
Do not plug one extension into another to gain extra reach or sockets. The extra outlets do not increase the permitted load at the supply plug. Avoid using an extension as a convenient way to group high power heating or cooking appliances. Check each appliance's instructions and power rating rather than judging by physical size.
Do switches and surge protection add capacity?
Individual switches can make a group easier to manage. Surge protection serves a different purpose and does not protect against every form of overload or make a damaged lead acceptable. A surge protected extension should be assessed for its specified use, not treated as a substitute for a suitable circuit.
Cable reels have particular unwound and wound load limits. The extension reel with thermal cut out needs its own instructions followed, including unwinding requirements. A thermal cut out is a protective feature, not permission to exceed the stated rating.
When are permanent extra sockets the better option?
If the same extension crosses a doorway every day, or a room has changed use, ask a competent electrician to assess additional fixed outlets. The assessment includes the existing circuit, protective devices, earthing, cable routes, intended loads and the installation location. A double socket faceplate cannot be assumed to double the available circuit capacity.
Plan positions around furniture, accessibility and cleaning. A smart switched socket adds control features in a suitable installation, but Wi-Fi does not change the basic design requirements. Agree on sensible access so plugs do not end up trapped behind heavy units.
What warning signs need attention?
Stop using equipment with scorched plastic, damaged insulation, a loose connection, crackling or an unusual hot smell. Do not cover an extension with rugs or soft furnishings. Keep liquids away, avoid crushed cable behind furniture and regularly inspect accessible plugs and leads.
If protective devices trip repeatedly, arrange assessment rather than using a different socket to avoid the symptom. A lasting improvement may be more outlets, a different load arrangement or circuit work, depending on what the electrician finds. The Electrical Safety First video below is a useful reminder that the number of available holes is not the same as safe electrical capacity.
Compare the key choices
| Need | Possible approach | Boundary |
|---|---|---|
| A few low load AV connections | Suitable single extension lead | Observe total rating and appliance guidance |
| Long temporary reach | Correctly rated lead or reel | Protect cable and follow unwinding limits |
| Everyday permanent demand | Electrician assessment for fixed outlets | Existing circuit must be suitable |
| Repeated tripping or heat | Stop use and investigate | Do not bypass the warning |

Frequently asked questions
Can I connect two extension leads together?
Avoid daisy chaining. Choose a suitable single lead or have the permanent arrangement assessed.
Does a surge protected lead prevent overload?
Surge protection and overload protection address different problems. The lead’s total load and use instructions still apply.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’.

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact.

Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident.
