Will a weatherproof lid still protect the connection when your equipment is plugged in?
Updated 30 October 2026 · Electrical Xpress buying guides

An outdoor socket can make garden equipment, seasonal lights and a patio area easier to use. The important work happens before the fitting is chosen: deciding where it belongs, what it will supply and how the complete circuit will be protected. A high IP number on the lid cannot answer those questions by itself.
Where should the socket be positioned?
Think about standing water, irrigation, cleaning, accidental impact and access. Avoid positions where a plug or cable will obstruct a path or be trapped by furniture. The supply route needs suitable mechanical and environmental protection, particularly around garden tools and future planting.
Compare the Saxby single weatherproof socket and double weatherproof socket as different outlet arrangements. More outlets do not create additional circuit capacity. Tell the electrician whether you intend to use lighting, tools or higher power equipment so the design is based on real loads.
What does the IP rating cover?
Ingress protection describes performance under specified conditions. Check the instructions for lid position, cable exits, mounting and the types of plug that can be enclosed. A bulky transformer or angled plug may stop a cover closing properly. Protection can be compromised by incorrect entries, missing seals or unsuitable mounting.
The Knightsbridge smart outdoor socket and remote controlled outdoor socket offer control features, but their enclosures still need to be used correctly. Wi-Fi or remote operation does not remove the need to inspect the physical connection. Do not treat a weatherproof socket as an underwater outlet or a safe position in a flood path.
What protection should the electrician assess?
Ask for assessment of the circuit, earthing, RCD arrangements, isolation, cable route and intended environment. A Type A RCD switched socket or outdoor RCD socket kit may be relevant products, but choosing either does not independently establish a compliant whole installation. Different devices and supply arrangements need coordination.
Fixed mains installation belongs with a competent electrician who can design and test it. This guide is for planning and selection, not drilling entries or connecting terminals. Requirements can vary with the work and location, so agree on the necessary inspection and documentation as part of the job.
What should you check after installation?
Keep the enclosure accessible and use it within the supplied instructions. Inspect the closed cover, seals, plugs and visible cables for damage. Stop using equipment that is cracked, scorched or allowing water in, and arrange assessment rather than covering the problem with tape or sealant.
Use outdoor equipment and leads appropriate to the conditions; do not run an indoor extension into the garden as a permanent solution. Follow the manufacturer's RCD test instructions and any labels provided by the installer. Before winter or a long period of storage, review the equipment instructions. A well planned outlet remains useful because access, maintenance and weather exposure were considered from the beginning.
Compare the key choices
| Planning point | Question to answer | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Could water collect or tools strike it? | Environment and mechanical damage |
| Plug clearance | Does the cover close as instructed? | Protection in actual use |
| Circuit design | What loads and protection are intended? | Socket count is not circuit capacity |
| Maintenance | Can seals and controls be inspected? | Long term reliability and access |

Frequently asked questions
Is IP66 enough to choose an outdoor socket?
It is one specification. Installation conditions, lid closure, connections, circuit protection and the intended load also matter.
Can I repair a cracked enclosure with silicone?
Take damaged equipment out of use and arrange a suitable repair or replacement. A cosmetic patch does not restore a tested enclosure rating.
